Sacred Safety
Acrylic on cotton canvas, 210 x 140cm.
This time, I wanted to paint something that represents total safety for women and children, because gender inequality in this area is still enormous around the world. Even in the wealthiest countries, women and children still need to be alert.
As I started sketching directly onto the canvas, linear and rounded shapes began to emerge. After the first stage of painting, a female figure appear, with a second figure taking shape behind her from an orange negative space. This figure represented a spirit holding the woman in its arms and standing behind her like a guardian angel. As I applied subsequent layers, this effect faded, yet it remained, manifesting as an invisible force ensuring complete safety. The female figure also appeared as a divine creation made of energy, representing the creation of healthy, safe new life.
The image turned out to resemble an eternal totem or amulet, radiating with all those qualities.
The painting contains colors that cannot be captured in a photograph. Through the camera lens, orange and vivid orange appear identical, though a few shots taken in dim light managed to capture the difference. Unfortunately, however, scanning the painting doesn’t do it justice. This is why I encourage you to view paintings in person, as it is impossible to convey colors and their dynamism through photographs on screens or in prints.
